First Step to work in Singapore
Working in Singapore is a dream for some people. Why Singapore? I think it's because Singapore is one of the most well-established country in Asia Pacific. And also, Singapore has been known as the lowest-crime country in the world.
I am Indonesian, and I was just graduated from my University. I wanted to work in Singapore, and of course my number one reason is because of the salary. Singapore offers up to 10 times salary compared to Indonesia. Wow! Yes, that's true. As a comparison, a foreigner can work in Singapore with at least S$1,800 salary per month, and you can get more than that! It is one of the requirements to get a working permit in Singapore. So, I made up my mind to work in Singapore.
Are you also interested to work in Singapore? In this post I will discuss what I prepared until I can work in Singapore now.
Strong Education Background
Yes, it's true. With a strong education background (eg. graduated from top universities in your country, with over-average skills), will ease your way to go to Singapore. Singapore is looking for highly skilled foreigner workers. Here, you will not be asked for your grades and GPA, just leave it, it's nothing! It's all about your skills!
Working Experiences
Although it is not necessary to have working experiences before, but I advise you to have at least one. Most of the companies here are looking for experienced people. Freshly graduated people can still try to look for an opportunity, just try your luck. When I was just graduated from my University in Indonesia, I directly went to Singapore, and it took 2.5 months for me to secure an employment.
Make Up Your Mind!
Here comes the most important part. You need to make up your mind, whether you want to make your living in Singapore, or just want to try it out. If you only want to try out, and after few months will go back to your home country, then I will suggest you not to go at all, because it will just waste your money. Opportunities come in a time and way that we don't know. Maybe for some people it takes 1 or 2 months, but maybe for some other people it will take 6 months or more, who knows. So, prepare yourself for the worst things!
Visas and Passes
We know that for some countries outside ASEAN will require to apply for visa to come to Singapore. Apply your visa, far from your departure date. For passes, the most simple way is, you can get a Social Visit Pass right when you arrive in Singapore, you will be allowed to stay in Singapore for 30 days. Not enough? You can try to apply EPEC (Employment Pass Eligibility Certificate) to get up to 1 year of staying in Singapore. See the details here. You can also try to apply LPR (Landed Permanent Residence). You need to pay some fee for this. See the details here (look for In-principle Permanent Residence Application).
